The University of Alabama (UAB) is a public research university located in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. It was established in 1969 and has grown to become one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in the state. UAB offers 140 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of fields, including medicine, engineering, arts, science, business, education and public health. The university is known for its cutting-edge research and health programs and has a diverse student body with students from all over the world. UAB is committed to providing a high-quality education and provides a variety of resources and support to help students succeed in their academic and personal lives. UAP Health System, one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States, is affiliated with the university. UAB Hospital sponsors residency programs in medical specialties including internal medicine, neurology, physical medicine, rehabilitation, surgery, radiology, and anesthesiology. In 1936, the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa established the Birmingham Extension Center due to the rapid growth of the Birmingham metropolitan area and the need for people to have access to university education.[10] The center operated in an old building at 2131 6th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham and enrolled 116 students.
