McGill University is a public research university located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The university was founded by a charter issued by King George IV in 1821 and named after James McGill, a Scottish businessman who founded the University's predecessor, McGill University (or simply McGill College) in 1813; In 1885 it was renamed McGill University.
